Our Language and Literacy area has carefully selected activities that help the children with their pre-reading and writing skills. Once the children are ready, there are lots of opportunities for them to learn phonics in readiness for school.
Our environment includes a topic display that is rich with diverse artefacts and activities for the children to explore and observe.
Multi-cultural stories and pictures help children understand how the world can be very different from the one they know.
The Maths area has lots of activities that will help the children to develop and improve their skills in counting, number recognition, understanding and using numbers as well as recognising 2D and 3D shapes, sorting, measures and practicing simple maths problems (when they are ready!)
The Understanding the World area also links with the Montessori Practical Life and Sensorial activities.
The children have the opportunity to explore and learn more about the world around them and include science activities, puzzles and matching activities using natural materials. Practical life activities give opportunities for the children to gain greater independence. Sensorial materials help the children learn using their senses and they generally constitute the next level of difficulty after those of Practical Life.
Whether the children want to make tea, design their own dolls house or build ramps to race cars, the role play area is always busy!
What is available in the role play area is dependent on the children's interests. The adults observe and take notes, and then do their best to provide the materials required to answer the questions and get the most from their time at Tiggywinkles.
